There has been many scientific research done to prove that learning a musical instrument can greatly benefit us. However, what we Malaysians always will recall in our younger years is that our parents would constantly reason to us that:
“You need to go for piano classes so that in the future if you can’t get a job you can become a piano teacher! “
And it was almost every parent’s dream that their daughter or son would learn to play like a certain French pianist by the name of Richard Clayderman (does anybody still remember him these days?)! Haven’t we heard all that before? Funny as it is, but let’s talk about the true benefits of learning the piano.
Improves Mathematical Skills
Playing the piano helps in this sense as the player will have better understanding of mathematics as they would need to know how to count time signatures and beats. Piano studies require them to learn how to subdivide when they are learning rhythmic notation. So this is definitely very good for young children.
Reduces Stress
Studies have found that playing the piano reduces stress and anxiety. Piano practice can actually help curb depression. It may be seen as a form of meditation. Many musicians have taken to their instruments to create some of the most beautiful music as a form of expressing themselves.
